    Lifestyle changes

    Exercise and weight loss can improve the sexual performance of obese men suffering from impotence. As you exercise more, you will sleep better and eating right healthy foods and the right vitamin intake will improve things greatly.

    That's the conclusion of a two-year study by Italian researchers who found that such a lifestyle-enhancing program enabled one-third of the men to consistently achieve an erection.

    The study, by researchers at the Center for Obesity Management of the Second University of Naples, appears in the June 23/30 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

    The 110 men ranged in age from 35 to 55, and all had a body mass index of 30 or higher -- the official marker for obesity -- when the study began. And all were suffering from erectile dysfunction.

    For two years, 55 of the men took part in a program that counseled specific exercise and weight-loss goals. The other 55 men didn't receive such lifestyle counseling, but they were given general information about healthy food choices and exercise.

    At the end of the study, nearly a third of the men who received the lifestyle counseling -- 17 -- reported improved sexual performance. Conversely, only three of 55 the men who didn't receive the lifestyle counseling experienced the same level of improvement in sexual performance, according to the study.

    To measure improvement, the researchers used a scale called the International Index of Erectile Function. The scores of the men in the counseling group improved from 13.9 to 17. For other group, the scores were virtually unchanged -- 13.5 to 13.6.

    The men who received the counseling had significant reductions in weight and increases in physical activity, while there was little change in men in the other group.

    Two U.S. experts differ in their interpretation of the study's finding. Both agree that weight loss and physical activity offer clear benefits for overall health. They disagree, however, on whether they would try lifestyle changes before prescribing anti-impotence drugs such as Viagra to men like those in the Italian trial.

    The Italian study showed that lifestyle changes can improve sexual performance for obese men. But the benefits came over two years, too long a time for most men to wait, sexual performance is so important to most men that a desire for improvement would make them more likely to follow lifestyle advice. These men should take weight loss seriously. Another very important issue is stress. How we handle the everyday problems in our lives.

    It is very hard to be erect when your mind is filled with problems from the office.

    Start by keeping a record of stressful situations and rate the actual level of stress from O (most relaxed) to 10 (most stressed). Start to monitor your stress by writing on a pad what you were feeling before, during and after stressful events or situations. As you begin to observe your levels of stress, you will notice that these levels are not constant. You will find that stress levels increase when you are concentrating on your most alarming thoughts and bodily reactions, but stress levels fall when your attention turns away from these areas.

    This will show you that one way to reduce the level of stress in your life is to actively turn away from negative "stress building" thoughts and to concentrate on positive stress busting ways of thinking. Stress contributes to impotence. In most instances stress is the major cause of this problem.

    Learn to meditate, imagine yourself in beautiful peaceful surroundings. Once you relax, and develop confidence, things will slowly change. Let things evolve slowly. Be peaceful. Believe.

    Recommended Supplements

    IntraMax - Multivitamin/mineral complex.  Take according to label.

    Vitamin E - 200-400 IU daily.  Increases circulation.  Do not use if you take prescription blood thinners.

    L-Arginine - 1,000 mg three times daily on empty stomach.  An amino acid that can help with blood vessel dilation and improved blood flow which are requirements for an erection.

    Panax Ginseng - 100 mg 2-3 times daily of a product standardized to between 4 and 7 percent ginsenosides.  May improve libido and sexual function for men.

    DHEA - 25 to 50 mg daily if lab tests show deficiency.  Must be under supervision of doctor.  DHEA is a precursor hormone to testosterone.

    Cordyceps Sinensis - 800 mg two times daily.  Used to treat low libido and impotence.

    Muira Puama - 500 mg three times daily. South American herb to improve impotency.

    Niacin (Vitamin B3) 250 mg three times daily.  Improves blood flow.

    Zinc - 30 mg twice daily.  Required in the synthesis of testosterone.

    Tribulus Terresteris - 500 mg three times daily. May improve erectile function.

    Aromatherapy - Oils that stimulate sexual desire are ylang ylang, jasmine, patchouli and sandalwood.  Add a few drops to bath or to a carrier oil for a massage.

    Don't smoke or allow yourself to be exposed to secondhand smoke.  Nicotine is a cause of impotence.

    You don’t have to go through life without sex. As stated earlier, it could be a state of mine, or it could be your body is telling you something. Either way, if you apply the techniques and tips contained herein, you’ll find your sex drive will return and you’ll be able to enjoy a romantic night with your significant other once again. Why fight it. Do something about it and enjoy your partner.
