Q: Does anyone have suggestions for treating colic in an infant?

After all, Garlic hits allergy and inflammation and lowers cardiovascular disease and helps prevent clotting and always LOWERS LEAD AND OTHER TOXINS. Of course, I never go without Essential Daily Defense, the active agent in my oral chelation, which is not just EDTA or Malic Acid or my special Heparin-like mucopolysaccaride but always high quality garlic.

A2: From practical experience: The mother can take Alpha lipoic Acid 100mg daily to see the effect. Alpha Lipoic Aid is best taken empty stomach for higher absorption. Effect should be evident within one to three days. The rationale is the pollutants from the mother having passed transplacentally and through the breast milk, toxic heavy metals (Antimony, lead mercury), organic pollutants from meat/diary. Alpha Lipoic Acid has sufficient potency and bioavailability to chelate these toxins when mother takes it. Should the mother's toxin load is too high. She should abstain from fresh milk, fish with mercury, too much meat and increase the dose of Alpha Lipoic Acid gradually to 300mg to 400mg daily. Failing that, can also add on Zinc and Magnesium to the mother. Take care of the environment of the baby, clean air, no cleaning spray, hair spray etc. use by adults in the house.

Functional abnormalities in Italy congress Functional abnormalities in newborn infants have become more prevalent in recent years. In the context of a private pediatric clinic in Hong Kong, infants with unexplained hyperirritability, unrestful sleep, anorexia, milk intolerance, early allergies and developmental delay occurs with rising incidence. No identifiable medical causes are found and hence reassurance is the usual treatment. These symptoms tend to persist and the affected children grow poorly, develop frequent infection and chronic allergies. There has been a dramatic increase in incidence of severe generalized eczema in infants reported. The unrestful sleep pattern also persists and has been found to be associated with hyperactivity, tics, bruxism and attention deficit. The worse case would develop autistic spectrum disorder. In the quest for a rational explanation, a novel approach has been tried for the last five years. The hair of the mother or of the infant were analysed for toxic heavy metals and mineral status. Toxic metals like lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, antimony and tin were frequently shown elevated level. While essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, and cobalt were frequently shown depressed levels. The main reason has been the increasing environmental pollution with a habitual high consumption of seafood in Hong Kong. Under informed parental consent, a novel therapeutic regime was tried with Alpha Lipoic Acid 25mg to 50mg per day was given. The functional disorders would alleviate within a few days but the complete remission of all the symptoms would require a period of two to three months of supplementation. An encouraging phenomenon of these infants observed are a catch up growth of the head circumference and of the body noted during the treatment period. In recent years, deleterious effects of mercury on foetal brain and cardiac function has been documented from asymptomatic mothers having consumed polluted fish during pregnancy. These health effects are thought to be permanent. But bearing in mind the potential plasticity of the foetal and newbornโ€™s brain, a safe and timely intervention by means of this novel approach should deserve further research.
The crux of this presentation is the lack of awareness of the impact of environmental pollution on perinatal health, advances in nutrition, anti-oxidant research could not be utilized for optimizing health by medical professionals.
Safe intervention with the use of anti-oxidants, minerals, dietary discretion during pregnancy has fostered a promising healthy future for the million of infants suffering from early functional disturbances.

A5: Strongly recommend osteopathic cranial manipulation of infant.
Cranial nerves 9, 10 and 11 may be mildly compressed, and easing of the occiput by an experienced practitioner can make a huge difference.
Of course, other areas may also need to be treated.

A7: My partner and I treat several babies with colic. We always check the ileocecal valve. In most cases it is either malfunctioning or closed. This can cause a great deal of distress during digestion and once it is massaged and begins to function the discomfort is relieved and there is usually instant relief on the infants face. Oh, did I mention mom and dad are more relaxed as well. It may take several times prior to the valve working on it's own but the procedure does not take long and is easy to perform.

A13: Was the baby born via Csection? A lot of babies in a European study born by C-section are deficient in several strains of beneficial intestinal bacteria ie L. bifidi,and acidophili.. Supplementing with a proprietary mixture of bifidi, aciphophili, even S boulardii should be helpful.
