Q: Are there any treatments to decrease the effect of radiation. For example: exercise, Vit D, other supplements, homeopathic or other detox etc. David J. Krizman, MD

A: There were some references to using vitamin C to prevent and treat various radiation-induced effects in Dr. Thomas Levy MD JD's excellent Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins: Curing the Incurable. It has a zillion references, so you can get the original articles if you feel the need to defend your practice.

A2: Adaptogens have significant ability to protect normal cells during radiation therapy. Studies have shown this with Korean Ginseng as well as Eleutherococcus ("Siberian ginseng"). Others, such as Ashwaganda, Rhodiola, etc., would probably work just as well. High dose vit C, preferably IV but alternatively with Gary's excellent highly absorbable C, is also very helpful. We also recommend AHCC one gram three times/day.

The question on dental X-rays: The research on bone loss was with RADIATION THERAPY, not diagnostic X-rays. There's a huge difference in dosing. Still, it would obviously be better to limit all X-ray exposure as much as possible (unless you believe in "hormesis"...a discussion for another time).

Good luck,

Rick Linchitz MD
