Kidney disease may be congenital (polycystic kidney), autoimmune-related with an inherited component (glomerulonephritis), or the result of infection (pyelonephritis), injury, or hypertension. Left untreated, kidney failure will be fatal, and the treatments for it -- dialysis and kidney transplantation -- are far from easy or pleasant. When patients are already in frank kidney failure, conventional doctors warn them to avoid eating protein and other habits that put stress on whatever functional kidney tissue remains. If patients had this information much earlier, they might be able to avoid the drastic interventions. Here are the most common kidney stressors: tobacco smoking - which cuts down blood flow to the organs, high blood pressure, dehydration, alcohol, caffeine and other stimulant drugs, jarring motion - as in running or horseback riding, and a high-protein diet. The metabolism of protein puts a huge workload on the kidneys. If you know that you have abnormal kidneys or have had any kidney disease in the past, the two most important things you can do to protect yourself are to follow a very low-protein diet and never allow yourself to become dehydrated.
