Bad teeth heredity?

I have often heard of this, but I am not quite sure if this is true. Many people say that if you regularly brush your teeth and still have lots of cavities or bad teeth, then it must be hereditary. If this is so, if my parents have bad teeth it doesn't matter if I take the normal oral health care? I am just really curious about this. I have a friend who has really good teeth even if his mom has missing teeth. Does this mean that he will also lose his teeth eventually?
