Fibromyalgia is an increasingly common condition that is characterized by long-term, body-wide pain and tender points in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. The National Fibromyalgia Association reports that as many as 10 million people have fibromyalgia, and over 80 percent of those diagnosed are women.

Fibromyalgia can mimic rheumatoid arthritis without the swelling and deformity of joints seen in rheumatoid arthritis. Ironically, this is unfortunate since people with this disease look perfectly healthy while feeling so ill.

By far, the chief complaint of fibromyalgia is pain followed closely by fatigue:

*Muscle and joint pain on the neck, shoulders, sternum, lower back, hips, shins, elbows, knees.

*Fatigue *Sleep disturbances

*Body aches

*Reduced exercise tolerance

*Chronic facial muscle pain or aching

It is not known what causes people to develop fibromyalgia. Preliminary studies have hinted that there may be a genetically inherited disposition to develop the disorder, but that is not conclusive.

The clinical management of fibromyalgia leaves much to be desired. Until recent research showed that the pain was real, many doctors referred people with this disorder for psychiatric care. Since fibromyalgia isn't a bacteria, virus, or germ, doctors have a hard time dealing with something they can't see. Some patients are helped by anti depressants, but many are not. Traditional treatment options are few.

Fortunately fibromyalgia is one condition where alternative medicine can definitely help. Naturopathic doctors feel the fundamentals of disease are malnutrition, toxins, and stress on the immune system. Things like mercury in tooth fillings, industrial chemicals in the products we use, and various other toxins in our environment magnify each other and affect the immune system so that eventually it does not function properly.

A holistic approach will seek to boost your immune system through detoxification, proper diet, and supplements in combination with treatments such as chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage. Many people have found relief in these methods. Fibromyalgia isn't a life sentence of pain and fatigue.

I'm going to a meeting about Alpha PXP and the literature states it has 90%+ absorption at the cellular level. It is a combination of complex carbohydrates and vital proteins having essential and non-essential amino acids plus the most important vitamins and minerals and antioxidants in dry powdered form. I'm told it is very beneficial for numerous health conditions, especially fibromyalgia. Is anyone familiar with this functional nutrient and had any results?

I just read an interesting article by Moton Walker, DPM which was written in 1999 and quotes a statement of Carl Hawkins, DC of Salt Lake City, Utah that his experience with bovine colostrum "has been quite phenomenal when it comes to fibromyalgia cases". Dr. Hawkins says that within two to three weeks his patient's fatigue, muscle and joint pains and other symptoms were all gone. Swanson's has a product called High Ig Colostrum containing ColostruMune, which is a product of Sterling Technology. They give a dosage of two capsules two times a day. Another part of the article says take four capsules on an empty stomach as a therapeutic dose and reduce thereafter to one or two capsuls twice a day. You need to be careful to get a safe clean product and the one from Swansons sounds good. Colostrum is good for many things. It boosts the immune system.
I sincerely hope this helps.

I've been suffering with fibro since the late eighties. What has worked for me is grapeseed extract 320 mg/day in divided doses, MSM 4000 mg/day in divided doses, vitamin c 4000 mg/day in divided doses, a good high quality multiple vitamin, and liquid chlorophyll 1 tbsp in water, yielding 100 mg chlorophyll. (I take more than this but I feel that these things have helped the most.) Also VERY IMPORTANT low impact areobic exercise, and weight training. Make sure that the weights are not more than you can handle, be sensible, start slow and make sure you talk to your doctor before doing any of this. When I have one of those miserable nights sleeping I take 5 mg. not allowed. I still don't sleep as well as I should but I'm a lot better than I used to be and it seems like I can handle the lack of sleep better. It has been my experience in talking to different people with fibro that what works for one person may not work for someone else. I hope this helps.

Good results for fibromyalgia has been a treatment called "Bowen Therapy". It is different and better than acupressure or massage. It somehow helps expel toxins among other thing. Six or more treatment are required which is a lot for Bowen (considering how stubborn FM is). Do a search of Bowen Therapy to find a practitioner.

University of Virginia researchers published results from one of the first clinical research studies conducted on magnet therapy for pain in today's issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Although the results of the study were inconclusive, magnet therapy reduced fibromyalgia pain intensity enough in one group of study participants to be "clinically meaningful," the researchers said.

The study was conducted with partial support from a grant from the National Institutes of Health Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Three measures of pain were used: functional status reported by study participants on a standardized fibromyalgia questionnaire used nationwide, number of tender points on the body and pain intensity ratings. Data were compiled for 94 fibromyalgia patients randomly divided into four groups. One control group received sham pads containing magnets that had been demagnetized through heat processing. The second control group received only their usual treatment for fibromyalgia. Two other groups received active magnetic pads: one group used Pad A, which provided whole-body exposure to a low, uniformly static magnetic field of negative polarity. The other used Pad B, which exposed subjects to a low static magnetic field that varied spatially and in polarity. The subjects were treated and tracked for six months.

"When we compared the groups, we did not find significant statistical differences in most of the outcome measures," said Ann Gill Taylor, R.N., Ed.D., co-investigator for the study, professor of nursing and director and principal investigator of the Center for Study of Complementary and Alternative Therapies at the University of Virginia. "However, we did find a statistically significant difference in pain intensity reduction for one of the active magnet pad groups. The two groups that slept on pads with active magnets generally showed the greatest improvements in outcome scores of pain intensity level, number of tender points on the body and functional status after six months."

Pad A group exhibited a consistent improvement across all four outcome measures at three and six months. Pad B group showed an improvement in all outcomes at three months, and these improved scores were maintained at six months. The sham pad group and the group receiving only usual care did not exhibit the same improvements.

The magnetic fields of the mattresses were tested thoroughly to quantify how much exposure, or dosage, study participants were receiving, the researchers said.

"Finding any positive results in the groups using the magnets was surprising, given how little we know about how magnets work to reduce pain," said the study's principal investigator Dr. Alan P. Alfano, assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation and medical director of the U.Va. HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital. "The results tell us maybe this therapy works, and that maybe more research is justified. You can't draw final conclusions from only one study."

"To our knowledge, no other studies on magnet therapy have been done in as rigorous a clinical setting as U.Va., and this study was the largest conducted so far," Taylor said. "Nevertheless, larger studies are needed to find clear answers about magnets' safety and efficacy in treating pain."

"Fibromyalgia is a common rheumatological condition for which there is no generally effective treatment," Alfano said. "People who have fibromyalgia try everything and magnetic mattress pads are one of the most popular complementary products they try. We did this study because we hoped to provide some useful information for them.

"In the past decade, people in this country have been using magnets for everything from tennis elbow to carpal tunnel syndrome. They want to do something for their pain that doesn't involve medication or injections, and magnets seem relatively benign. But people don't know how to evaluate magnetic products when considering what to buy. There are no standards for magnets yet. So researchers need to find out what dosage, field strength and period of exposure is proper, what side effects may occur and what conditions benefit most," Alfano said.

Two other basic science laboratory studies currently underway at U.Va. are investigating the effects of pulsed and static magnetic fields on neural processes and functions and the effects of magnetic fields on microvascular capillary blood flow. If You want more information reguarding how to naturally treat Fibromyalgia, please don't hesitate to ask , bye for now .

I don't want to believe what I've been finding on another forum I joined, and the Net, but it is pretty well documented that fibromyalgia, MS, chronic fatigue syndrome and autoimmune diseases in general are caused by mycoplasma. These articles describe how the government created these diseases in developing biological weapons. The links can describe it better than I can.

http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/mycoplasma.html

http://www.immed.org/publications/infectious_disease/acfs99.html

I have autoimmune problems myself and there's MS and lupus in my family, so I'm not too happy about this!!

We are reversing all symptoms of severe fibromyalgia using generic prescription meds and some necessary tricks and tips.

I developed the treatment method, was the first person on it, and host a free web site http://www.FibroFix.com that tells all that we have learned.

We discovered that the natural flow of hyaluronan throughout the body can be disrupted. This malfunction is the cause of all symptoms of fibromyalgia. Not the cause of the syndrome, but of the *symptoms*.

The treatment we are using is generic prescription meds with some essential tricks and tips to make it all work. Not a cure and not remission, just a daily treatment that works.

There is nothing for sale, no blaring testimonials, no donations accepted and all details are provided free of charge and public domain. It is a gift from my husband and me to those who still suffer. We are grateful for what we have received.

As long as I stay on treatment, I am pain free without pain pills, sleeping well, strong, flexible, clever and happy with my life back.

There are hundreds and hundreds of people now using this method. Many have been seen in my Internal Med doc's local practice here in Orlando. Many others were helped over the internet via the web site, email and phone.

Dr. Thomas D. Harris, M.D. Internal Medicine Specialist, Orlando, FL
407-351-9696 is my PCP.

He listened right from the start, and now treats all Fibros based on the model of what happened with me. They are all pain free without needing pain pills.

Like my husband and me, he has not exploited what we have learned. He just wants to help people get well.

I am also blessed to have had the ear, care and advice of Dr. R. Douglas Stiff, MD. FACOG, Gyne, Branson, MO; ARNP Janet Fundaro, OKC,OK, and now Samuel Pratt, R.Ph. a nationally-known and innovative compounding pharmacist in Altamonte Springs, FL; and also Katherine Poehlmann, PhD in Health Science, Torrance, CA. (another medical maverick - she wrote Rheumatoid Arthritis - The Infection Connection after reversing her own RA.).

During the first two years on this treatment, something else gradually happened. The chronically bulged discs in my back returned to normal shape and are firm again. The cartilage in the joint of my right knee ( a joint that did not work
for 20 years ) grew back to normal thickness. It moves quietly, smoothly and is pain free.

My teeth, which kept splitting, are stable again. Monthly periods returned - after 25 years.

For 20 years I had about a 15 to 20% intellectual deficit. I have back my good mind and can feel my friends again.

When you read all the other body systems that were affected, then restored, you will realize that knowing about this malfunction and how to reverse it will be important to consider on most medical research.

Just please read every word of the site.

I am glad to answer questions for doctors, researchers, patients or the media.

http://www.FibroFix.com/discoveries.html tells what we know to this point.

http://www.FibroFix.com/Testimony.html gives the best overview of what happened, how and when. It also tells about the change in my faith, about fibromyalgia, and about family and friends who waited 20 years for me to come back to them intellectually and emotionally because of this illness - and never gave up.

So much research is coming in this days that people suffering from fibromyalgia have real hope of living a good quality of life. Summer of 2005 revealed fibromyalgia is a "neuroendocrine disease" involving the dysfunction of the HPA Axis (hypothalamus - pituitary - adrenal). Also, much research is showing fibro patients have mitochondria dysfunction - Acetyl - carnitine is routinely low in fibro patients which would certainly effect the mitochondria.

Look into Dr.(s) Robert Bennett. Kent Holtorf and J. Teitelbaum for starters. You can also put University of Michigan and Georgetown University in your search engine for information on groundbreaking research. Dr. Daniel Clauw should be included in that list as well.

An excellent website for all things concerning fibromyalgia (plus chronic fatigue syndrome) is http://Immunesupport.com and worth taking a look at.
