Small muscles are attached to the upper end of the testicle, and these muscles contract to draw the testicle closer to the body during cold weather, and relax during hot weather so the testes drops away from the body to keep cool. This keeps the testicles at a fairly constant temperature, which is slightly lower than normal body temperature. This is necessary for the health of the sperm, and a testicle that is too hot or too cold will not produce healthy sperm.
If the testicle will not retract, the testicle may be more prone to suffer from low temperatures, and may be more likely to suffer injury. A man is completely fertile with just one testicle, so this problem will not affect your son' s fertility, but as correcting it is a relatively simple procedure, there is no reason why it should not proceed.
