Q: Does anyone have an understanding of what seems to cause Lipoma's?

Thanks,
Timothy C. Gerhart, Chiropractic Internist

A1: Dr. Gerhart,

I have never ever been able to find the cause in any literature. It is my opinion, since I have treated several hundred by injection of B12 directly into the lipoma, that they are caused mechanically, i.e., the "pushing" of a fatty globule through the fascia so that the lipoma is lodged between the muscle & its fascial sheath. Most lipomas are found on & around the PSIS's of the hips, caused apparently by the mechanical action of a chair against a person's low back.

As you know most lipomas are asymptomatic. However, some can hurt like hell. When this situation occurs it must be because the fatty globule has not completely pushed through the fascia, that is, apparently there is a tear in the fascia and the lipoma has not completely been sequestered. Thus, injecting water (B12) swiftly & directly into the lipoma causes it to become liquified & thus helps close the tear in the fascia. This treatment is usually successful in one treatment, although sometimes it make take more due to the size of the lipoma.

I hope this helps. I know it isn't real scientific... only my observation.

W. Greene, D.C.

A3: Has anyone heard of what, if any, toxic materials might be found in Lipomas?

A4: I do not know what causes them, but I have found that injecting them with Phosphatidyl choline will cause them to dissolve.

A5: Lipomas can also be dissolved by mesotherapy, using Phosphatidyl Choline (without deoxycholic acid) injected into the lipoma. you can include a cc or 2 of lidocaine or procaine with PPC, also carnitine, B12, Traumeel, or hyaluronidase or collagenase. Check with the compounding pharmacies for dosage, if you are not familiar with these protocols.

A6: I suspect they may contain sequestered toxic materials such as heavy metals and/or xenobiotics, as they seem to be more often found in those with a lot of amalgams or other evidences of metal poisoning, but I am not aware of any exams being done to verify that.

A7: Are we talking about the lipomas found also at the base of the neck? Is that called dowergers hump? If so instead of surgery is there a injection protocol to liquifie..like the B-12 injection?
