A7: Hello Mr. Graham: This email side steps the EDS issues but rather addresses the spider bite as there may be a viral connection here. Try going to
http://www.highway60.com where you can find similar stories of people who have been bitten by brown recluse spiders. I have heard that mega doses of zinc taken internally immediately after being bitten can prevent necrosis. Zinc kills certain viruses on contact. If you try this I would suggest zinc citrate in 50 mg size. The "Equate" brand by Walmart have a very small tablet size which reduces the large amount of excipients you'll begetting with larger tablets.
The tablets must always be taken with food and chewed to reduce them to powder to prevent stomach upset. The suggested dose is 1 gram per day. I have personally used up to 300 mg per day for a year to treat a copper overload situation with no ill effect. My Serum Zn went above the reference range but returned to normal shortly after discontinuing useage. I would recommend raising the doesage gradually to approach one gram/day, for three to four days and then discontinue. Stop if vomitting occurs, wait one day and resume up to a lower doseage. Some people also apply zinc oxide topically to the wound. A suitable diaper rash cream could be used here. They contain about 15-20% zinc oxide. Good luck.
