Q: dear Doctors,

I have a 20 year old male diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis last year and is on conventional immuno-suppressive meds. I recently ran a Metametrix genetic probe GI panel to look for klebsiella and it came back negative for this. I hate to use antibiotics when not indicated, but I recall that some of you mentioned curing AS by treating for Klebsiella.

Any thoughts?

A1: First, look to Normans Cousins book Anatomy of an Illness. He cured his AS by laughter and IV vitamin C. Next, AS is definitely associated with Klebsiella in a number of patients. The organism could be in the gut and put out antigens.
I have seen at least two total remissions of the disease over the years in my practice. One was intense bowel cleansing combined with supplements supporting bowel health and natural agents to get rid of toxic organisms.
That patient did have the organism. Another cured the disorder by adopting a raw foods diet I term "Living Foods Diet" in my newsletter.
The test you did is good. But no test is foolproof, and there could be other organisms as well. I don't think that anyone has to use antibiotics except in life threatening conditions. I have repeatedly seen H. Pylori resolve without synthetic petrochemicals, in fact, 100% of the time. Sometimes it is easier to use a low dose antibiotic for the RA according to the Road Back Foundation. Be sure to look for adrenal weakness in this patient. And use herbal "antibiotics" before chemical ones. Don't forget about oxidation as well.

A2: Ron,

I have a patient in LA who is a comedian by trade (male, age 38). He was dx 2 years ago. I placed him on a gluten/casein free diet, along with 8 grams of omega 3's, milk thistle, B5, Vitamin D3 (3 g), etc. He received no antibiotics, steroids, or immunosuppressives, although they were rx by rheumatology. He became asymptomatic within 6 months of the tx plan and is fine today.

A3: Autoimmune disorders are almost always caused by microbes....the ones I test for are bartinella, strep, borrellia, and mycoplasma...if any of these are positive, give the appropriate antimicrobial therapy....in addition always prescribe hydrocortisone and dhea...the starting doses are 20mg and 50mg respectively tid....also, give thyroid, and any other hormones that are depleted....always use an aggressive detoxification including bowel detox (colonics with ozone are incredible) and major auto therapy with ozone and glutathione every day....always eliminate food allergies....also, inject ozone into all affected areas....this approach has always worked for me...

A4: Spinal decompression, that is necessary, you can use the anatomotor table to help, it works way better than those extremely expensive DRX9000, O3 with chelation is the only possible solution.

A5: At 20 you won't hurt anything by treating for it despite the negative test. Have him do yoga. I had one guy with AS who developed full range of motion after doing a spinal twist in yoga class!

A7: Ron,you might try using gallium sulfate. I'm attaching a link. These autoimmune arthropathies do seem to have some kind of stealth, infectious etiology. Trying to identify the microbe is like finding the proverbial "needle in the haystack" The gallium has worked miraculously on a few cases of RA. I would also make sure patient is saturated with Iodoral. Those halogens appear to be the cell's natural antimicrobial. I have more success augmenting natural immunity rather than trying to track down and kill a specific microbe. Put onus on patient to change his diet. Treat the terrain.

A8: You could test for a range of blood antibodies to intestinal bacteria (including Klebsiella pneumoniae) via RED Labs http://www.redlabsusa.com/intestinal_dysbiosis/
Genetically susceptible people and those with leaky gut will be immune reactive to intestinal bacteria even when not present in excess levels.
Levels of kelbsiella may be completely normal but still a problem.

Hi Health Dr-1,

There are few effective treatments for ankylosing spondylitis, which causes substantial morbidity. The relationship between AS and enterobacteria, especially Klebsiella pneumoniae, has been reported from several groups in several countries. Treatment with moxifloxacin resulted in significant and sustained improvement. At 12 weeks, patients treated with moxifloxacin had significantly greater improvement in primary outcome measures (P < 0.001). The moxifloxacin group also had significantly greater improvement in many of the secondary outcome measures (P < 0.001). In this twelve-week trial, moxifloxacin was safe, well tolerated, and associated with improvement in the inflammatory symptoms of AS.

BUT Studies are in progress, but existing studies are not dramatically positive.
