Dietary changes can help you maintain a healthy heart.

People with diabetes are at an increased risk for heart disease, which can lead to a heart attack. Just because your risk is higher, though, it doesn't mean that you're powerless. Making healthier diet choices can go a long way in keeping your ticker healthy. First up, give trans fats the boot.

Formed in processed foods during hydrogenation a technique that makes a fat solid when at room temperature โ€” trans fatty acids have recently emerged a nasty culprit in raising cholesterol. While they don't affect your blood glucose, by lowering or eliminating trans fats, you may avoid heart-related complications. Use these suggestions to trim bad dietary fat:

If you're currently eating a moderately high-fat diet, your trans fatty acid intake may be too high. Try to get less than 30 percent of your calories from fat and less than 10 percent from saturated fat.

Stay away from processed foods. Instead of stick margarine, choose soft table spreads that contain no more than 2 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon, or lists liquid oil as the first ingredient
Fried foods, baked products, and snack foods usually contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, a big source of trans fats.

Look for baked products, convenience dinners, and snack foods with less than 2 grams of saturated fat per serving.
Use vegetable oil instead of solid shortening in cooking.
Read the labels: Now that food manufacturers are required to list trans fats on the Nutrition Facts label of food products you can make better, more informed choices.
