A1: Dear DK,
By this time of the year the body's immune system has fought the good fight. Any additional challenge can create infection. Therefore, I would recommend an allergy profile, perhaps a hormonal workup (depending on your age and gender), and a program to build the immune system. I call it giving the "good guys" more bullets. Our bodies resist things all winter and the spring pollens kick them over the top.....like a rain barrell when an abundance of conditions cause it to over flow. The testing empowers you to make more informed healthcare decisions.

A3: DK - that is because sinus infections are almost ALWAYS FUNGAL and not susceptible to antibiotics! Any number of anti fungals help in combination with avoiding food allergies (typically dairy) Cheers Bradford S. Weeks, M.D.

A4: In late 1999, The Mayo Clinic documented that virtually all chronic sinusitis problems were due to a localized fungal infection. That point is still disputed among those who continue to prescribe antibiotics for the condition and see the condition marginally improve. I have found that antibiotics do indeed help many fungal maladies, but only for a short time, leading many to conclude that "this bacterial condition must be a nasty one requiring a stronger antibiotics." Of course, if it were treated with the topical antimicrobials referenced in this column and depending upon the severity of it, a good antifungal agent, it would respond. Fungus thrive on antibiotics and the one thing they do when "treating" a fungal condition is assure its chronicity. If one were to visit The Mayo Clinic today with a chronic sinusitis condition, virtually 99% of the practitioners would prescribe an antibiotic. This amazes me, but I certainly can see the long term profitability of such a move..

A5: The Sept 1999 issue of "Mayo Clinical Proceedings"has your answer.ENT researcher Jens Ponikau and his teamed proved then and have continued to prove that sinusitis is a fungal infection 96% of the time. They started looking for a different causitive agent in response to the revolving door created by serial antibiotic reatments.

Google "sinusitis/ fungus/Mayo" and you'll bring up something about their research.

Anti-fungals such as colloidal Ag(Argentyn is a good brand),grapefruit seed extract, oregano, olive leaf extract and iodide (Electrodine) are things you want to incorporate. You have to take them nasally, not orally."Sinus Rescue" by Peaceful Mountain has colliodal Ag."OMG" nasal spray has oregano, xylitol, grapeseed extract, and quercitin.Once you kill the fungus, your immune system will reign in the bacteria.Using antibiotics facilitates fungal growth.

A6: A number of years ago Mayo Clinic published a paper that most people being treated for sinus infections really have mold allergies. Since antibiotics did not work I would investigate the possibility of mold allergies or other allergens.

A7: Find Loomis Enzyme practitioner near you http://www.loomisenzymes.com/locator.asp and see if the NSL enzymes help I find them of great benefit in my practice. Often times a sinus infection is fungal in origin and antibiotics will not help.

Also, irrigating the sinuses daily with a saline solution (my patients use Sinus Rinse products) helps immensely.

A9: Ozone thru the ears plus ozone bubbled thru nasal canula plus IV ozone/Uv, test for allergies with electrodermal and make remedy plus comprehensive stool analysis for parasites (treat if present) and hereditary allergies for gluten, milk, soy and eggs (avoid those causing allergies). The latter denude the epithelial lining of the gut exposing mast cells which release histamine and contribute to sinus problem as well as asthma. Also otherwise fix the gut. These are good starters. A10: A safe and effective therapy involves nasal insufflation of oxygen/ozone. The process intails breathing a combo of oxygen/ozone through a nasal canula bubbled through olive oil. The ozone becomes a ozonide a safe to breath. Upon contact with the sinus tissue the singlet oxygen is released and the positive effects of ozone occur without the any side effects. In addition get a neti pot and rinse with oxygen/ozone water. This should clear most if not all chronic issues in the sinus.

A11: Try irrigating the sinuses 3-4 times daily with a nettie pot (they are available at health food stores). I use a little sea salt, & xylitol in alkiline water if available. If the infection is really bad I sometimes open an antibiotic capsule and add about 1/4 of the capsule to the solution each time I irrigate. You may have to have the mucus cultured to see what is growing in there and use an antibiotic that the culture indicates would be optimal.

A12: Health food or yoga supply stores carry neti pots, specifically designed with a spout that fits into one nostril allowing saline water to flow through the sinuses and out the other nostril. I also add one or two drops of tea tree oil (or any of the other antifungals that Roby recommends--starting with very tiny doses). You can also get your pharmacist to order a Neil Med Sinus Rinse and use it in the same way.

A14: This is a recurring theme.
After you have exhausted all possible causes, basically, this is likely to be due to either food intolerance or food allergy, that is not cured with antibiotics. The antibiotic is for a super imposed infection, which invariably happens.
Consult an EAR, NOSE AND THROAT SURGEON, (OtoRhinoLaryngo Surgeon) trained in the school of AAOA, (American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy) using the intradermal provocative serial dilution food antigen test. Find out the incriminating food items and reduce their consumption, or even better don't eat them.
Test for toxic metal overload and detoxify. Boost your immune system with supplements and a balance healthy diet.
