Health Tip: Risk Factors for High Cholesterol?

(DrEddyClinic News) -- Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that's found naturally in the body. And while some cholesterol is necessary, too much of it built up in the blood increases your risk of heart disease.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute offers this list of factors that raise your risk of having high blood cholesterol:

- Eating foods that are high in cholesterol and saturated fats.
- Being overweight. Losing weight can help lower cholesterol and reduce heart disease risk.
- Not getting enough exercise. At least 30 minutes a day most days of the week is recommended.
- Smoking or having high blood pressure.
- Being a postmenopausal woman. After menopause, levels of LDL ("bad" cholesterol) naturally rise.
- Advancing age, which is a risk factor for both men and women.
A family history of high cholesterol.

I totally agree with you. According to my opinion, focusing on foods we eat is the most important way to prevent high cholesterol levels in particular and keep ourselves healthy in general. Thus, I am very careful to choose foods for our daily meals. Actually, alfalfa is my permanent choice for cholesterol levels control. You may not know that one of the most typical benefits of alfalfa is to keep cholesterol levels in check. Loading with great amount of dietary fiber, alfalfa is really beneficial for the fight against high cholesterol levels. Moreover, the combination of fiber and saponins in alfalfa will inhibit cholesterol from locking arterial walls. As a result, “good” cholesterol levels inside the body system may be balanced well. Beside its taste is very great and I can eat it a lot!
