Water filtration systems?

Q: Does anyone have any experience with putting whole water filtration systems in their homes, not just the drinking water?
Thanks

A1: We had a system from Assured Water in northern California. They can likely help you out wherever you are. It is carbon filter combined with a water softener for a well. For drinking, a R/O unit was added. The combination for the whole house was fantastic. Great water all over the house. Assured Water phone number is 1-(800) 647-4295. http://www.assuredwater.com/

A3: You might try Mr. Dean Tipton @ General Ionics in Oklahoma City. His local number is 405-330-6034 and his l/d number is 1-800-649-4071. You can also e-mail him @ giokc.com.

A4: yes, I have a system from Radiant Life which has a carbon filter at the water main in our basement that removes chlorine and chloramines and then a potassium based water softener so that water to the whole house is improved but then we also have a system under the kitchen sink that is R.O but then remineralizes the water . It is also from
Radiant Life We love the system Hope this helps

A5: We have two systems on our home. The first, the Grander system, is installed at the curb on the line leading from the water main. We bought the unit about 8 years ago for $1800. It services the entire property.

The second system is manufactured by Ionics, Inc., recently acquired by GE. Their IQ series unit runs about $2800. It's in the garage and services the entire interior of the house.

A6: I've done this for the whole home using sediment and charcoal filtration systems. Some observations:
1) the units need to have sufficient capacity to NOT reduce pressure and thus, shower flow rates
2) the most important point of exposure is in the shower - dissolved gases (such as chlorine and chloramines) in cold water instantly outgas in the valve when the cold stream hits the hot stream of water - heat makes the gas less soluble; cold makes gases more soluble in liquid
3) shower units and drinking water units are all you need
4) if you use a whole house system, you will get rings in the toilets and this will become a housekeeping maintenance issue
5) you can run separate water lines to the toilets and hose bibs โ€“ these really don't need to be filtered

I think that only a charcoal filter is needed when considering whole house filtration; for drinking water, remember it is hard to remove fluorine; I've heard mixed opinions as to whether or not RO units remove fluorine - I think that the only way to do that is by distillation. Also, remember, RO units remove minerals and that, in turn, will create water that will leach minerals from teeth.

I have after years, given up on the whole house approach: instead, I focus on the shower and bath water - including water that goes into steam rooms / baths / saunas. For drinking water, best to go with alkaline mineral water in glass bottles. Personally, however, I compromise on fluorine (though maybe I should not) and use a high quality filter at the sink that is also plumbed to the chiller and icemaker in the fridge.

A7: Carbon filtration (lots of units to choose from) is economical, easy to install and service, and effective for removing many toxins including chlorine and its byproducts from the incoming supply without significant loss of water pressure. Carbon allows municipal fluoridation chemicals (industrial fertilizer and aluminum waste containing silicic acid, trace heavy metals and radionuclides) to pass through. Do not waste money on whole house filter systems that claim to remove municipal fluoridation chemicals. They do not significantly reduce fluoride ion levels and can increase aluminum which can cause skin allergy and harm kidneys. The combination of aluminum and fluoride together causes endocrine disruption through receptor poisoning at concentrations many times lower than either toxin alone (Strunecka and Patocka).

Whole house reverse osmosis systems are very expensive, greatly reduce pressure, and produce deionized soft water that leaches copper and lead from plumbing as it courses through the household pipes. Fluoride can be reduced by about half but you lose all the good alkaline minerals so the fluoride that is left in the water is basically unopposed.

A8: I have referred several patients to this and they have liked the results

FLUORIDE FILTERS
According to http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryhowtoguide/a/removefluoride.htm there are three ways to remove fluoride from your water:

1)Reverse Osmosis Filtration
2)Activated Alumina Defluoridation Filter 3)Distillation Filtration

Other filters, like Brita and Pur do not remove it. We had a nice RO filter installed for around $600, but they are available for less if you want to do it yourself. The water tastes great!

A9: We have a whole house carbon filter system as well as a reverse osmosis drinking water filter. My wife notices the difference in her hair when she showers in unfiltered water. I also prefer not to breathe chloroform.
