Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea, a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease (STD). Gonorrhea, sometimes referred to as the clap, often is characterized by thick discharges from your penis or vagina. But many people experience no symptoms. The bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, also referred to as gonococcus, causes gonorrhea. The disease spreads through unprotected sexual contact, heterosexual or homosexual, with an infected partner. The more sexual partners you have, the greater your risk. An infected woman also can pass gonorrhea to her newborn infant during delivery. Casual contact doesn't spread the disease. The incidence of gonorrhea is higher in adult women than in adult men and much higher in girls ages 10 to 14 than in boys of the same age.
Signs and symptoms Signs and symptoms of gonorrhea may include:
In men, the first symptoms of gonorrhea generally appear between 1 day and 2 weeks — typically 2 to 5 days — after exposure to the bacterium. First, there's a tingling sensation in the urethra, the passageway that carries urine from your bladder to outside of your body. A few hours later, urination becomes painful and you may notice a discharge from your penis. As the infection progresses, urethral pain becomes more pronounced and the discharge becomes more profuse and thick. In women, initial symptoms may not appear for 1 to 3 weeks, if at all. Symptoms are so mild you may not realize you have the infection. Often, the only clue that you may have gonorrhea is that someone else who had sexual contact with you develops the disease. The infection usually affects your cervix and other reproductive organs as well as the urethra. In some women, gonorrhea causes frequent, urgent and painful urination along with an abnormal discharge from the vagina or urethra. In about half of women, however, the only sign is a slight increase in vaginal discharge.
