Treatment of Anorexia by Edward F. Group III, D.C., Ph.D, N.D.,CCN
People with anorexia usually resist treatment and do not wish to respond to behavior changes. They firmly believe that if they just lose enough weight, they will feel good about themselves, improve their lives, and enjoy self-confidence and success. After a while, however, they begin to understand that the supposed benefits of thinness are only an illusion that will never bring them happiness. Starving, stuffing, purging, and other self-destructive behaviors will never lead to peace and a meaningful life. It usually takes when they hit rock bottom that they will be forced to change. Even then the road to recovery will not be easy. Between 20 and 30 percent of people who decide to get treatment stop too soon and relapse. Even if they do stick with it, they can and often do have lapses and slips, leaving them discouraged and demoralized. Wanting a quick and easy solution to their problems, they too often give up when they find that recovery can take many months, even years, of hard work before they are free of their destructive behaviors. At this point you begin to wonder if recovery is at all possible. Can anorexia be treated successfully? The answer to that is a resounding yes. Lots of people recover from it. Recovery, however, as noted above, is a difficult process that can take seven to ten years or even longer. Some people recover faster. Those who work the program correctly and abide by what the physicians and counselors say to resolve their condition, usually come around faster. Sadly, the rest remain chronic sufferers or die. Because many factors contribute to the development of an eating disorder, and since every person's situation is different, the "best treatment" must be custom tailored for each individual. The process begins with an evaluation by a physician or counselor. Treatments for Anorexia
