We know from that last section that the appendix is a small, worm-like attachment at the beginning of the colon. Earlier it was believed that the appendix served no purpose within the body at all, so it was often removed as a preventive measure. It is now believed that the appendix helps in the immune system of the intestinal tract, and is therefore more likely to become infected, just as the tonsils are in the throat. Usually a blockage will irritate the appendix, causing a build-up of bacteria which can lead to infection. Hardened stool through long-term problems with constipation can cause such a blockage.

Prevention is worth a pound of cure. The best way to prevent appendicitis is to eat plenty of green leafy vegetables. More about this is covered below under "Nutrition". However, if you find you do have symptoms of appendicitis already, there are some herbs that have been known to help reduce the effects. These herbs include: detoxifying and fever-reducing herbs (Flos lonicerae, Fructus forsythiae, Herba taraxaci, Patrinia scabioseafolia, Gypsum fibrosum), circulation-enhancing herbs (Semen persicae, Radix paeoniae rubra, Squama manitis, Spina gleditsiae), and laxatives (Rhizoma rhei, Mirabilitum depuratum). Belladonna and Bryonia are classic homeopathic remedies often used for an inflamed appendix with symptoms. Patients who used the appropriate homeopathic remedy plus conventional Western medicine found relief from their symptoms and cleared up their appendicitis quickly.

Appendicitis Prevention Methods


According to the Chinese, appendicitis is thought to be caused by blockages in the circulation of blood and flow of vitality. They believe that using acupuncture will help relieve pain, control peristalsis (the wave-like movements of muscles in the intestines), and improve blood flow.


A healthy diet which emphasizes raw, fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains and at least eight glasses of liquid a day will provide the fiber needed to prevent constipation and minimize the risk of the appendix becoming infected. Raw food also provides enzymes, which help boost the immune system. Two tablespoons of flax seeds daily will keep stools soft and prevent constipation. Take garlic regularly to boost the immune system. Eat lactic acid fermented foods such as natural, unsweetened yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut regularly to keep the bacterial culture in the colon healthy.

Nutritional Supplements

If surgery has been performed, Vitamin E supports wound healing and Vitamin C prevents infection and supports the immune system. Bioflavonoids work naturally with Vitamin C. These vitamins are excellent during any infection, and Vitamin C can be taken in high dosages if necessary. The B vitamins can be added to the regimen to provide the body with the extra strength needed for the stress of the surgery and illness.

Also Lactobacillus acidophilus complex should be taken concurrently and for several weeks afterwards to re-establish the healthy intestinal flora, essential for a healthy digestive system.

The most important vitamin supplements include:

  • Vitamin C, with bioflavonoids, 500_1,000 mg every few hours, up to 5,000 mg daily
  • Acidophilus (Lactobacillus) complex, 1_3 capsules or 1 tsp.
  • Vitamin E, with mixed tocopherols, 400_800 IU
  • Vitamin B complex, 50 mg one to three times daily

Herbal Remedies

For prevention, treatment and recovery, herbal remedies provide excellent therapy.

  • While recovering from *surgery, 1 tbsp. of horseradish distillate daily is excellent as an antibiotic and reduces *fever and inflammation.
  • Borage is also good for fever reduction. Take 1 tbsp. of borage juice daily.
  • For future prevention, keep stools soft by taking 1 tbsp. psyllium seed husks in water every evening.
  • Take 1/2 cup of aloe vera juice daily before breakfast to promote healing and immunity.


If appendicitis is suspected, consult your physician if there is no improvement in twelve hours. In case of emergency call for 911. Homeopathic remedies may be taken, 30c strength every fifteen minutes up to 10 doses while waiting for help.

  • Use Belladonna for a red, hot face. The slightest movement makes pain worse.
  • Bryonia is recommended for intense pain that is caused by the slightest touch over the appendix area.

Tissue Salts

For mild, recurring attacks that do not need immediate surgical attention, take 4 tablets four times daily under the tongue.

  • Kali mur is helpful in treating severe inflammation. It can destroy waste material when the body is fighting off a *fever or infection.
  • Ferr phos carries oxygen to the parts of the body that need it, especially during conditions of fever and inflammation.

Other Suggestions

  • While waiting for the doctor, rest in bed in a half-sitting position.
  • Measure and record temperature and pulse.
  • Apply a poultice of cool mashed potatoes, mud or healing clay on the liver area.
  • If recommended by your doctor, take enemas and fast for detoxification and to speed healing.
  • Exercise regularly to help prevent fecal matter from lodging and hardening in the colon.
  • Hydrotherapy over the abdomen is an excellent treatment.
  • For future prevention, keep stools soft by eating plenty of fiber.
  • In the acute stage, a fluid-only diet is recommended. This rests the inflamed bowel and helps avoid waiting before receiving anesthetic, if surgery is necessary.

Not every remedy works for each person. You will have to experiment with each one until you realize the benefits thereof. In many cases natural cures have been more productive and safer than OTC or prescribed medicine. One reason for this is the synthetic materials OTC and prescribed medicine is made of. By taking these medications you are actually doing more harm than good. You are feeding your body chemicals your body can’t assimilate, thereby being stored in the body. This later turns into cancer. When you take natural products, you are providing your body chemicals from the earth that the body can absorb. This gives the body more fighting power, in turn better health.
