Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix (the opening into the uterus) usually caused by infection. However, in some cases, cervicitis can be caused by infection, including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Successful treatment of cervicitis involves addressing the cause of the inflammation. You can take steps to reduce your risk of cervicitis from STDs.

Signs and symptoms

Most often, cervicitis causes no signs and symptoms, and you may learn you have the condition as a result of a Pap test or a biopsy for another condition. If you do have signs and symptoms, they may include:

• Vaginal discharge that's grayish or yellow, possibly with an odor

• Pain during intercourse

• Vaginal bleeding after intercourse, between menstrual periods or after menopause

• menopause
